The Odyssey by Homer is an epic poem that describes our need for recognition and power, and how we treat people through the story of Odysseus. Because Odysseus changes from a prideful, controlling man to a man who still has pride but also respect for others, we can see that we attempt to protect our pride and authority through trying to control the situation, which causes us to lose sight of important goals, but by loosening our grip and acknowledging and respecting those who are superior to us, we can accept our faults and maintain the important things in life. Because Odysseus is facing his fears of losing control of his life and dying a meaningless death in the ocean after leaving Calypso’s island, we see a change from a man with too much pride and a sense of control, to someone who is weak in the face of his greatest fear, which shows us that we protect our pride and authority through trying to control the situation, but we have to let go of some control and face our fears and transgressions, so that we can reach a less arrogant and more open mind. As Odysseus approaches his Abyss, â€Å"Odysseus’ knees shook and his spirit failed. In anguish he communed with his great heart: ‘Poor wretch that I am, what will become of me after all?’† (70) In the quote when the author describes the ‘great hearted’ Odysseus’ knees shaking, and his spirit failing, his flaws are open to us and himself. In that description, it seems as though Odysseus is unaware of how this will play out, which is obvious when the quote says â€Å"Poor wretch that I am, what will become of me after all?† because he is admitting to not being able to control his future and how he will be viewed, and that is something he cannot bear, the unknown. After his spirit had already failed, â€Å"As he spoke, a mountainous wave, advancing with awesome speed, crashed down upon him from above and whirled his raft around. The rudder was torn from his hands, and he himself was tossed off the raft†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (71) The emphasis on the ‘awesome speed’ and mountainous size of the wave is used to make Odysseus look insignificant and vulnerable, and when the wave ‘whirled his raft around’ we were able to feel the lack of control Odysseus felt. His most important moment of fear is, â€Å"The rudder was torn from his hands†¦Ã¢â‚¬  because a rudder is what steers or controls a boat, and when one is torn from his hands, it symbolizes him losing control over his own life, he can no longer steer it and that is what Odysseus must face and come to terms with. â€Å"Then he wound the veil round his waist, and with his arms outstretched plunged head long into the sea and boldly struck out.† (72) At first, Odysseus’s prideful and arrogant self dismisses her help even when he is in great peril, but once his plan of heading back to his raft fails Odysseus realizes Ino is his only hope for succeeding, â€Å"Then he wound the veil round his waist†¦Ã¢â‚¬  showing that he looked past his pride in order to succeed. â€Å"†¦with his arms outstretched plunged head long into the sea and boldly struck out.† This part of the quote shows an Odysseus with renewed energy entering the waters that had taken his control away moments before with more confidence, and he is basically winning back control from the waves by lending some control of his life to Ino and her veil. Odysseus show us through his change here of noticing the need to let some control go and facing his transgressions, that we protect our pride and authority through trying to control the situation, but we have to let go of some control and face our fears, so that we can reach a less arrogant and more open mind, and eventually succeed. Because Odysseus shows an understanding for the reasons why the Suitors paid for their transgressions while talking to Eurycleia, we see the complete change from an overly prideful and controlling man, to a man whom still has pride but knows how to let go of control and respect others to reach his goals, which shows the solution to our theme that even though we protect our pride and authority through attempting to control of the situation, we can keep sight of our goals and success by letting go of some control, understanding the power of those who are greater than you, and respecting your faults. This Odysseus brags about hurting and out smarting the Cyclops, â€Å"†¦Tell them your eye was put out by Odysseus†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Now at the time of th e atonement, Odysseus was a much different character. â€Å"Restrain yourself old woman, and gloat in silence. I’ll have no cries of triumph here. It is an impious thing to exult over the slain.† (298) This is the man who boasted all those who he had fallen to his sword and he had injured, now a man who tells others to ‘gloat in silence’. Silent is something he was never before about how great he was, and saying, â€Å"I’ll have no cries of triumph here, † is a symbol of how far he has come, because the Suitors were trash that he took out in order to restore his place, yet he still isn’t celebrating their demise. By using the word impious, Odysseus also makes the point of how it’s disrespectful to the gods to gloat over death, something the old Odysseus wouldn’t have cared about. Odysseus shows a new understanding of the consequences of transgressions and disrespect, â€Å"These men fell victims to the will of the gods and their own infamy. They paid respect to no one on Earth who came near them- good or bad. And now their transgressions have brought them to this ignominious death.† (298) In this quote Odysseus also gives strength and respect to the gods, by saying, â€Å"These men fell victim to the will of the gods† He’s saying that it wasn’t him that was able to take the Suitors, it was the gods. Odysseus also describes the Suitor’s maltreatment of people, no matter who they were, showing an understanding of one of their greatest transgressions, similar to his own. At, â€Å"And now their transgressions have brought them to this ignominious death,† Odysseus is saying that their transgressions, specifically not respecting their fellow man, is what brought them a disgraceful and pitiful death. Odysseus’ in depth views on the Suitor’s downfall, the gods, and their faults is a show of how he understands the consequences of those who are too insolent and disrespectful, which is a complete change from the overly conceited and controlling Odysseus to the more open minded and respectful man whom knows his goals, showing us t hat even though we attempt to protect our pride and authority through controlling our lives and those around us, we can keep sight of our goals and succeed by letting go of some control, understanding the power of those who are greater than you, and accepting your faults. Continent people do the virtuous thing most of the time but still have to overcome a moral dilemma, and virtuous people enjoy doing good actions, and so they face no moral dilemmas in life. Choices are important as every human has an aim in life. Such aims are then split into either superior or subordinate aims and, according to Aristotle; the superior aim of an individual is Dominance as this is the final purpose of a human. In society, some people re hedonists and seek pleasure, some serve the community and seek honor (politicians) and some are philosophers and live in a state of contemplation. Aristotle believes philosophers to be the best as they possess the ability to exercise key intellectual virtues which allow them to steer themselves towards Dominance. Therefore, any increase in inflation will generally lead to pressure on the nominal interest rate to increase, to offset the deduction that will result from inflation. However, as we have seen above, price level decreases add to the real value of money, this is the same as saying that they decrease inflation. A decrease in inflation will mean that real interest rates are now higher than they were before the decrease in inflation. Therefore, price level decreases raise real interest rates and cause pressure for interest rates to be reduced.[4] Thirdly, lower prices increase the international competitiveness of the economy, and this should be reflected in increased international demand for the economy’s exports, causing a rise in net exports and thus in the aggregate demand. Now we will look at aggregate demand shocks. A demand shock is an event that is sudden and unexpected, and has the effect of measurably affecting the demand for goods and services in the economy, either positively or negatively, for a temporary period of time.[5] That is to say, the event shifts the AD curve, either to the right or to the left. A positive demand shock increases demand and shifts the curve to the right, resulting in higher prices. A negative demand shock decreases demand, shifts the curve to the left, and thus leads to a decrease in prices. Any number of events could constitute a demand shock, from an unexpected tax cut that increases consumer spending, to a dip in consumer confidence that decreases consumer spending. The relationship between two currencies may be nominal (e), or it may be real (RER). The real exchange rate takes into account variances in price levels in the two economies. P represents price in the domestic economy and P* the price in the foreign economy. [7] The exchange rate can be used to increase or decrease the price of goods in the economy relative to other economies. This will in turn impact on the international demand for a country’s products. This will impact on the net export figure (NX). A higher exchange rate will decrease international demand and thus will pressure a demand curve towards the left. This could be used to temper a positive demand shock that had increased demand for goods and pressured the curve towards the right. Likewise, a lower exchange rate will increase international demand, increasing exports and shifting the demand curve to the left. This could be used in the event of a negative demand shock to reduce the impact of the shock.[8] Basically, if any sector of demand changes rapidly, the government can seek to push exports in the opposite direction by making them more or less expensive. It is a simple idea and manipulating exports may be more desirable than manipulating other elements of demand, such as government spending, and may be easier to manipulate than, for example, consumer spending. Finally, the question must be asked, is the approach feasible? A central bank can quite easily impact on exchange rates by trading in its own currency. Buying will increase the exchange rate and selling will decrease the exchange rate. However, in order to move a currency value significantly, a central bank would be required to buy or sell a ‘significant’ amount of a currency. So what constitutes a ‘significant amount’ in the foreign exchange market? The global currency market is the largest and most liquid asset class in the world. The accepted size of this market in 2007 was generally put at about two trillion dollars a day. That would make it ten to fifteen times the size of the bond market and fifty times the size of the equities market. That means on a normal trading day, two trillion dollars passes hands. It would take an enormous amount of selling or buying by a central bank to make a dent in this market. A central bank that stepped in to buy or sell a couple of billion dollars worth of their currency would barely be noticed on the market, especially for the major currencies. And the question arises, how would a government fund such an intervention? It is also estimated that about 85 to 90 percent of the forex market is made up of speculators, meaning that attempts to manipulate exchange rates would be vulnerable to massive speculator bets which would have the power to undo any effect a government had on price movements.[9] Also, given the side effects of exchange rate changes, such as the relationship of the exchange rate to inflation, it is likely that the cost of moving the exchange rate, just to get the indirect benefit of altering net exports, would outweigh the benefit.[10] Therefore, it is concluded here that while exchange rates could be manipulated to insulate the economy from aggregate demand shocks, it amount of intervention required would be too large to justify the measure. Richard Nixon was president of the United States and the people trusted him. However this trust would be betrayed, as he got involved in something now known as the Watergate Scandal. This was an interesting time in history because it was a large cover up by the Republican Party. Also, how different people reacted to this event was fascinating because some people were so blind to the truth, that they stuck behind Nixon even once tapes and other credible evidence against him was produced. In this paper I will describe the events of Watergate and the publics opinion and reactions to this lengthy Scandal that corrupted our Nations government. Richard Nixon was the thirty-seventh President of the United States of America, serving a term from 1969-1974, being elected not once but twice. He is the only President to have resigned from office during his term as President, by doing this however he escaped the likely process of being impeached. Although there are several theorists that have tried to discover the reasoning as to why people become criminals. Each theorist has different theories explaining criminal behavior. There is the anomie theory or innovative adaptation. This explains that those with criminal behavior have a condition when behavioral expectations are unknown, undefined, or in conflict (Champion, 2008). This theory is accredited to Robert King Morton, however was originally proposed by the French sociologist Mile Druthers (1858-1917) (Champion, 2008).Morton implies that people either accept or reject goals of society, and they accept or reject means to accomplish those goals (Champion, 2008). Psychological theories address the individual's behavior through trying to explain the inner workings of the mind (Champion, 2008). The problem of getting it to all work together has to be solved. So, you solve it as best you can. How do you solve the problem of managing multiple blogs or authors? Most of the solutions weve been hearing about are a bit ad hoc, and use different flavors of the following: Project management systems (e.g. Basecamp) Spreadsheets Cloud notes (e.g. Evernote) Email Calendars (e.g. Google) Were no stranger to this kind of setup ourselves.  Our system of managing multiple blogs and authors has a level of complexity that can be frustrating. The main issue is that while each of those listed components, on their own, are great tools, they dont work together. Used together, they are a solution that creates its own problem. They were meant to be for project management or for note-taking or sending messages or for some other specific purpose, but they were never meant to help you completely manage your team blog. Individual components dont make a whole, unfortunately. Project management systems seem very close to a solution, and thats why so many of you have told us how you try to make them work. They dont, however, have a necessary integration with your WordPress blog and social media accounts, so any data will have to be manually entered before it can be managed. A read-only calendar is great for getting an understanding of whats happening, but making quick changes based on that understanding wont be available. The people of this area did not totally arrive until the English had colonized the coast of the eastern seaboard forcing the now Appalachian people westward to the interior mountains. The main influx of people came in on the second wave of migrants. This people were of Scotch Irish, German, Welsh, French and Swiss decent. These people from the start were rugged mountain people that were very self sufficient and mainly lived from farming as there means of survival. In the beginning there was no Appalachian culture because every one was from different areas. It took well over a hundred years of interaction with each other and isolation from other parts of the country to develop there culture. The major reason this region developed separately is because of the isolation from the outside world for so long. The reason that isolation occurred is do to topography of the land. These people lived in the mountains were outsiders from the seaboard could not or would not go. The first real time the people of Appalachia came into large contact with the other groups of the country was world war 2. At this time many men were drafted and came into contact with other groups. This is probably when some of the early stereotypes began to evolve about hillbillies red neck and many other interesting names. People in developed areas of the states thought primitive substandard people was what lived in the Appalachian region, and this was because they did not understand there culture. The fact that they were different then them was reason enough to make fun. The truth being that they developed the way they did because it best suited the environment in which they lived. Also,. they did not have much if any culture diffusion with the rest of the country. They were only different not worse then the rest of the population. They were probably harder works and had stronger family ties then the people the thought bad of them. The main thing that brought these people out of the mountains in the 1960's was the construction of the highway systems throughout the region. This in able these people to come down from there homes in the mountains and work in the cities. They were then in contact with people other then there own culture. Over the next thirty years they were still stereotyped and it was not totally unfounded because they were different but not in a bad way. Today there are still red necks and hillbillies and I consider myself to somewhat fit that profile, but with the new age of communication culture diffusion has had a large effect on this culture as well as the one's it came into contact with. People do not look at country people the same as in the beginning, they look at them in better and even envious way. Throughout the twenty century the environment of this region has been exploited for profit by lumber and mining companies that do not live here. Many of these companies did not consider the people and thus they stayed or got poor while the companies became rich. Things have change for the better over the years but we still have lower levels of income the most of the country. To discuss Appalachia as a region you first need to look at all the physical aspects. Appalachia is considered a region primary because it is a area of highlands. The topography of this region consists of four physiographic provinces which are the Piedmont, Blue ridge, Ridge and Valley, and the Plateau provinces. This region runs from 32 to 42 degrees latitude which is approximately 700 miles. The piedmont is the province closest to the Atlantic ocean. The participants using cued recall received a mean average of 36. 5 words recalled. The range from 22-43 whilst the participants using free recall received a mean average of 17. 2 words recalled, with the range from 13-21. This shows that anomalies have not affected the result. One way in which the experiment was limited and could have been affected by is the environment it was conducted in and the participants used. The participants were all Exeter College students and have chosen to further their education, their brain is still being trained so may be more susceptible to remembering information. Many students are often asked to take part in experiments so may have been using demand characteristics, which means they might have known the study is about retrieval failure and might already have known the study that was being partially replicated. Knowing this the participants would have known how to react. If this experiment were to be conducted using members of the public the results may have been different but the outcome would be the same. This is because results from the Tulving and Pearlstone study suggests this but also anyone given cues are likely to recall more information than if they are not given cues. A way to improve this study would be to conduct it in a controlled environment, free of any distractions so that the participants were concentrating solely on the experiment. This experiment was conducted using opportunity sampling, often in busy locations. This could have affected the results by diverting the participants concentration and other information would have prevented the participant from rehearsing the words. As future research one suggestion would be to concentrate on whether there was a pattern relating to the participants sex and the score they gained. To conclude, the results show that the recall of information is greatly improved when retrieval cues are available, a significant difference in the amount of words is visible. This agrees with the results gained from the investigation by Tulving and Pearlstone (1966). This study provides evidence that the free recall group knew more than they could recall, this can be stated as both groups experienced the same conditions during the learning phase and yet the cued recall group could recall far more words.
